WALKING and exploring the Peak District National Park
Walking is the number one activity for visitors to the Peak National Park.
There are around 1600 square miles of public footpaths and over eighty square miles of
open access country, including plenty of scope. The gritstone edges and
limestone dales are favourite haunts for rock climbers, while the White Peak
also attracts cavers who explore the underground world.
HISTORIC HOUSES
Three of England's loveliest houses have a history entwined with two of our
most powerful dukedoms and are situated in the area. So, if you are interested
in Historical houses then you must visit HADDON HALL, CHATSWORTH HOUSE and HARDWICK HALL.
The village of Tissington is perhaps the prettiest and most attractive of
villages in our area and is only 3 miles down the road.
The FitzHerbert family have owned and run this Estate village for the best part
of 500 years. For the first time in 1998 the present squire Sir Richard has opened
his home, TISSINGTON HALL, to the public.
WELL DRESSINGS
One of the Peak Districts most beautiful and endearing traditions is that of
well dressing which takes place in about twenty villages each summer. It
has become a Christian ceremony today, but probably originated as a pagan
thanksgiving to the gods who gave the villages the precious gift of water.
Two famous Peak villages are Tissington and Youlgreave which have a number of
different wells.
Local towns of ASHBOURNE and BUXTON
Both settlements are ancient market towns and have a great deal of history to
uncover. They also have many really interesting local shops and markets for
those 'shopaholic's' to explore .
EATING OUT
The area is full of wonderful country pubs, restaurants and tea rooms.
THEME PARKS
Britains most famous theme park is just 30minutes away - ALTON TOWERS
CYCLE HIRE AND MOUNTAIN BIKING
There are cycles to hire from Ashbourne and miles and miles of the
Tissington Trail (an old disused railway line) to track - most of which is quite
easy to cycle, taking you though the most stunning scenery |
